Islam and the Quran

Is a man allowed to love a woman?

Question: Is a man allowed to love a woman? Is it halal for men to speak with women?

There’s no sin in loving someone. The sin is for the strangers[1] of opposite sex to be together in a closed place, hold hands, hug each other, etc. without a bond of marriage between them. It is permitted to speak with each other for the purpose of marriage. Other than that, relations that take a person closer to sins are forbidden. The Glorified Allah commands:

“Do not even approach fornication for it is an outrageous act and an evil way.” (Al-Isra’/ Children of Israel 17/32)

“Tell the believing men to cast down their looks and guard their private parts. This is a more righteous way for them: Allah is aware of what they do.” (An-Noor/The Light 24/30)

[1] People that are considered strangers in Islam are those except: parents, siblings, spouses, parents of spouses, children of spouses, children of siblings and fosterlings. The Glorified Allah commands:

“And tell the believing women that they cast down their looks and guard their private parts and do not display their ornaments except what appears thereof, and let them wear their head-coverings over their bosoms, and not display their ornaments except to their husbands or their fathers, or the fathers of their husbands, or their sons, or the sons of their husbands, or their brothers, or their brothers’ sons, or their sisters’ sons, or their women, or those whom their right hands possess, or the male servants not having need (of women), or the children who have not attained knowledge of what is hidden of women; and let them not strike their feet so that what they hide of their ornaments may be known; and turn to Allah all of you, O believers! so that you may be successful.” (An-Noor/The Light 24:31)

On the other hand, there should be a limit to loving people or possessions according to the Quran:
“Say: ‘If your fathers and your sons and your brothers and your spouses and your clan, and the worldly goods which you have acquired, and the commerce whereof you fear a decline, and the dwellings in which you take pleasure are dearer to you than God and His Apostle and the struggle in His cause, then wait until God makes manifest His will; and [know that] God does not grace iniquitous folk with His guidance.'” (at-Tawba 9:24)
