Question: What is bid'ah? Can you give some examples...
Bid’ah (بدعة) literally means “innovation”, “creating something from no example”. One of the names of Allah is Al-Bedi’ (see 2:117, 6:101), which is the from the same root and means “The Originator” or “The Creator Without Examples”.
In Islamic terminology, Bid’ah means something or some kind of practice that is considered as a good deed or relevant with Islam’s teachings and practices of worship, although it came up later than the Messenger or has no direct relevance with Islam. It is briefly described as “innovation in Islam” in a negative meaning.

This concept is unacceptable for that Allah the Almighty commands:
“(…)This day I have perfected for you your religion, and have completed My bounty (Quran) upon you. I have favored this kind of submission (Islam) as your religion(…)” (5:3)

According to this verse, the Messenger of Allah says:
“Every bid’ah is going astray and every going astray goes into hell.” (Abu Dawud & Tirmidhi)

Some examples of bid’ah could be:
– Mawlid and any kind of prayer associated with it
– Khıdrallaz and any kind of prayer associated with it
– Kandil nights and any kind of prayer associated with it
– Tarawih prayers and believing that all sins committed in one year are erased with a Ramadan full of tarawih prayers
– Wearing jubba and turban and believing that it is better in Islamic terms
– Clothing of the imams in mosques, believing that the imam should wear them
– Calligraphies of the names Allah, Muhammad and his companions in mosques
– Men and women praying in total separate places in mosques
– Believing in saints (awliya), expecting a supernatural kind of aid from them
– Building shrines for dead people
– Reciting Quran to dead people
– Reciting Quran melodically
– Believing that Quran cannot be touched or read without ablution
– Saying “jalla jalaluhu” (great is his glory) after saying Allah
– Saying “sallallahu alayhi wa sallam” (may Allah support him and grant peace upon him) after saying Muhammad
– Using tasbih
– Wearing ta’wiz
– Reciting durood
