Question: Will the person be responsible from the mean thoughts that he generates in the mind? Is it possible to get rid of such thoughts?
Allah The Almighty commands:
“To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth. ” Allah will call you to account for whatever you have inside; whether you disclose it or hide it. Then, He forgives whoever exerts the effort for it, or punishes whoever deserves it, for Allah has complete power over everything.” (Al-Baqarah/ The Cow 2:284)
Our Prophet (p.b.u.h.) said:
“Beware, there is a piece of flesh in the body. If it becomes good(reformed), the whole body becomes good too, if it gets spoiled, the whole body gets spoiled as well, and that is the heart.” (Muslim, Musaqat 107)
What you have inside is not the same as what passes through your mind. What is in someone’s heart, such as; faith, disbelief, love, hate, grudge, or good intention, changes the direction of life. What passes through the mind is mostly Satan’s whispers. Sometimes such thoughts come to your mind that you even doubt and worry if you have become of those who ignore God (the kafir). Actually, this shows that you are on the right path. Because the Satan had said when he had received the permission till the last hour:
“[Satan] said, “Because You have perverted me, I will surely sit in wait for them on Your straight path. Then I will come to them from before them and from behind them and on their right and on their left, and You will not find most of them grateful [to You].” (Al-A’raf/The Elevated Place 7:16-17)
Since the permission has been granted to Satan, his deceiving, misleading whispers cannot be prevented. Even the prophets are not freed from this.
Allah The Almighty commands:
“(O Muhammad), whenever We sent a messenger or a nabi before you, and he had an expectation, Satan always cast something (false) in that expectation. Allah eliminates what Satan casts and He strengthens His Signs. Allah knows all and judges rightly.” (Al- Hajj/The Pilgrimage 22:52)
There cannot be a responsibility for the suspicions generated, as you do not have the power to stop the whispers of Satan.
Allah The Almighty commands:
“Allah does not impose upon anybody a duty but to the extent of its ability. Some of the things man acquires are to his advantage, and some are to his disadvantage.” (Al-Baqarah/The Cow 2:286)
