قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ {1}

  1. Say: “Our deity[2] is God! He is unique.

اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ {2}

  1. God is the Sustainer of all needs[3].

لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ {3}

  1. He has no offspring, nor was He born.

وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ {4}

  1. There is none equal to Him.[4]

[1] Sent down in Makka, consists of 4 verses. Named after the content of the whole chapter. ‘Ikhlas’ means ‘purity, sincerity, and loyalty’.

[2] The pronoun “huwa:هُو” in this sentence refers to “the deity” on people’s minds: “Your God is one deity. There is no deity but Him. He is The Most Gracious, The Beneficent.” (al-Baqarah 2:163)

[3] “Everyone in the heavens and the earth entreats Him.” (ar-Rahman 55:29)

[4]  This verse confirms the following verse in the Torah: “‘To whom then will you compare me, or to whom shall I be equal?’ says the Holy One.” (Isaiah 40:25)
