Question: What are the important points in choosing a spouse? What are the main criteria of Qur’an on in this subject?
You can find below the verses about choosing a spouse:
1- Faith is very important in marriage. The Glorified Allah commands:
“Do not marry mushrik women (who interpose others between themselves and God) until they fully trust in God. A captive woman who fully trusts in God is better than a mushrik woman even if she (the mushrik) has impressed you much. Do not give your girls in marriage to mushrik men until they fully trust in God. A captive man who fully trusts in God is better than a mushrik man even if he has impressed you much. They invite you to the Fire but God invites you, with His consent, to the Gardens and to forgiveness. God explains His verses to people, so that they may come to their senses. ” (Al-Baqara/ The Cow 2/221)
2- Both of the spouses should be honest, chaste and decent. They should not consider marriage as a game of love. The Glorified Allah commands:
“(…) This is the decree of Allah. Besides these, it is lawful for you to marry other women if you maintain chastity and do not commit fornication (…)” (An-Nisa/The Women 4/24)
3- Both of the spouses should be innocent or honestly repentant of adultery. The Glorified Allah commands:
“A man guilty of adultery shall not marry any but the woman guilty of the same or a mushrik woman, and none shall marry a woman guilty of adultery but the man guilty of the same or a mushrik man. Such marriages are forbidden to true believers.” (An-Noor 24/3)
“Except for those who repent and reform themselves, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.” (An-Noor/The Light 24/5)
