Question: What is fasting, or sawm?
In verse 187 of Chapter Baqarah, the Almighty God tells the believers that they are allowed to have intercourse with their wives, and to eat and drink in the evening, until the fajr time.
In the same verse, it is commanded to complete the fast till the night fall. This verse proves that fasting, in Arabic sawm: صوم, is abstention from drinking, eating and sexual relationship from fajr time until the nightfall with the intention of performing the fast and by seeking to gain God’s approval.
